This Smoked Salmon Tart is like an everything lox bagel on a puff pastry tart. It’s tender, flakey, and creamy, topped with salty capers, sharp red onion, herbaceous dill, and beautiful ribbons of smoked salmon. Sprinkle a little everything bagel seasoning over top and you have all the flavours of a lox bagel in a shareable brunch tart.

Why you’ll love this tart

  • Quick and easy. This tart is super easy to make and comes together in less than an hour.
  • Shareable. This tart is a fun shareable alternative to bagels.
  • Simple, but fancy. This tart is a beautiful dish. It looks fancy, but it’s really very simple to pull off.

You’ll need these ingredients

  • Puff pastry: This tart uses just one sheet of thawed puff pastry.
  • Cream cheese: One block of cream cheese, softened and whipped, gives this tart a nice tang and creaminess. You could also use whipped cream cheese. Because the tart is delicate, whipping the cream cheese (or using whipped cream cheese) helps to spread the cream cheese about more easily.
  • Smoked salmon: Thinly sliced smoked salmon brings a salty and smoky flavour.
  • Toppings: Traditional lox bagel toppings include thinly sliced red onion, capers, and dill. But, you’re welcome to use what you like. Swap out the red onion for shallots or scallions. Not a caper lover? Leave them off. Use what you (and your guests) will enjoy!

Everything Bagel Seasoning: Use a store-bought seasoning, or combine 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (I like to use a combination of white and black sesame seeds), 1 tablespoon poppy seeds, 1 tablespoon dried minced onion, and 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 months.

How to make smoked salmon tart

Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg wash.

Step 2: Using a knife, lightly score a ¾-inch border around the edge of the pastry. Using a fork, prick the pastry inside the border.

Step 3: Place the pastry on the parchment-lined baking sheet and brush the pastry with egg wash. Bake for 15 minutes, until golden and puffy. Allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Gently spread the whipped cream cheese over the middle of the cooled tart. Arrange the smoked salmon across the top. I like to tear the smoked salmon into strips and lay the strips down on their sides to get a wavy, ribbon effect.

Step 5: Top with red onions, dill, and capers. Sprinkle everything bagel seasoning and flakey sea salt over top.
