This French Onion Dip is creamy and rich, made with sweet caramelized onions. It’s the perfect game day dip!
This creamy Caramelized Onion Dip is the perfect game day dip for sharing with friends (or eating alone). Caramelized onions are sweet and jammy, giving this dip a delicious depth of umami flavour that can’t be rivalled by powdered onion dip packets. You need this dip in your life and at your next casual gathering!
How to make caramelized onions
We’re using thickly chopped onions as opposed to thinly sliced onions, which are perfect for sandwiches and French onion soup, but not really ideal for dipping. Take those chopped onions pair them with lots of butter, a bit of salt and thyme, and slow-cook them over medium-low heat for a good long while and we have all the flavour of French onion soup ready to add to our dip.
Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once hot and bubbly, add the onions. Season with dried thyme and salt.
Step 2: Cook the onions for 5 minutes, until softened.
Step 3: Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the onions until dark brown and caramelized, 30-40 minutes, stirring often. If the pan becomes dry, add a splash of water as often as needed.
Step 4: Stir in the tamari. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until the onions are dark and jammy. Remove from the heat and let the onions cool in the pan.
How to make caramelized onion dip
Once the onions are caramelized the dip comes together in mere minutes. Simply stir the caramelized onions into the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, and garlic powder until well incorporated. Serve immediately for the creamiest dip.
Make it Ahead: This dip is best served immediately, as it thickens in the fridge over time. So, my recommendation for making this dip in advance is to caramelize the onions ahead of time (up to 5 days in advance) then just before serving, stir together the dip. This way you get the creamiest dip possible. If time demands or you simply prefer a thicker dip, go ahead and make the dip in advance and store it in the fridge until needed. It’s going to be delicious no matter what!
What to serve with french onion dip
Chips. Lightly salted ripple or kettle chips are a fan favourite, but veggies, crackers, or pita crisps are also great options here. This dip is also perfect for slathering on burgers and smearing on sandwiches. However you decide to serve it, this dip is a hit!
